Salt of the Earth

SALT OF THE EARTH Inspired by the work of Vik Muniz (1996 "Sugar Children"), this portrait was created by overlaying salt crystals onto a charcoal image transfer. The thickness of the crystals was altered by the artist to bring out shadow and highlight depth in the portrait. Two paragraphs of Mandela's famous speech (see below), which he gave at the Rivonia trial where he had been tried for treason, has been inscribed below the print. Besides the theme and texture, the salt also implies the granular texture evident in film emulsion and print enlargements evident in analogue photography. Mandela gave himself to the struggle for democracy, deep down he was simply a unique person who cared more about others than himself. He is truly the salt of the earth and his legacy will never die!
